The Beauty Equation Challenge 6: Radiance

Teach:
Radiance – To enhance the brilliance of your inner glow

“The mirror can be your friend, but it is not the gateway to your magnificence.” – Nigel Barker

Nigel brings us into the 6th challenge, Radiance by questioning what it is we see when we look through the mirror. He wants us to stop our obsession with picking out our imperfections and flaws and realize that the mirror is only a mere mathematical tool for finding our Beauty Equation. The mirror functions as a plus or minus sign depending on our self-esteem when we look into it. Only someone who is capable of controlling their self-perceptions can use the tool correctly. This teach will be difficult for those who struggle with Body Dysmorphic Disorder, an obsession with a perceived flaw or minor imperfections. I challenge you to find the balance in questioning who you really are, not too much and not too little. This is important because this chapter talks about outer presentation, meaning your skin, hair, and clothes that tell your inner story.

“Beauty is never really found when you’re sitting in front of a mirror. You feel beautiful when you are out… finding those happy moments in life.” – Kimmy Hise

Nigel Barker cleverly reminds us that beauty is only skin-deep, superficial and we must look within a person to find their true beauty. He stated, “Just as everyone is  innocent until proven guilty, everyone is beautiful until proven ugly.” I thought this was a clever analogy.

We send messages to people around us about who we are by the way we behave, how we wear our makeup, and the choice of clothes we wear. All of these things are associated with our inner beauty or lack thereof.  It’s much harder to develop our character than it is to change our outer appearance to reflect the beauty we possess inside. Developing character is an individual task that takes time and requires the ability to understand yourself and who you are within. Work at it!

As far as our outer appearance, we MUST take good care of our skin, hair, entire body and even our wardrobe. Nigel advises that if you wear makeup, don’t over do it.  He agreed with Tyra that makeup can make a women feel confident and enhance natural features, but only if its done in the right proportions. Here are his makeup dos and don’ts

Do:
Love Your Skin
·      Your skin is the largest and most visible of your organs. It lives and breathes just like your heart.
·      Never put on makeup without washing and moisturizing your face and always remove your makeup at the end of the day.
·      Drink plenty of water.
·      Exfoliate at least once a week.
·      Steam bath your face.
·      Get some sleep!
·      Wear a hat in the sun
·      Wear sunscreen
See The Light
·      Do your makeup in proper lighting.
·      Study your face in different lighting using the shadows and highlights to understand and learn how lighting affects your features and how you look.
·      Use products that can mimic lighting effects (i.e. bronzer).
Remember Less is More
·      The less makeup you wear the more you shine through.
·      Experiment and learn what products work best for your features.
·      You don’t have to use ever type of makeup available (foundation, mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick, concealer). Only use what is needed to enhance your own unique equation.
Blur the Lines
·      Blend your makeup so that there are never any harsh lines. This stands true for foundation as well as eyeshadow and lipliner with lipsticks.
·      When you are done with your makeup, set it with a fluffy brush and translucent powder. Don’t forget your neck and hairline.
Protect the Innocent
·      Apply your makeup in a bathrobe or cover your outfit.
·      Use cruelty-free makeup (protect the animals that are used in the name of cosmetic research
·      People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has an online database of companies and brands that test their beauty products on animals.
·      While doing your makeup, have your upper chest exposed to accurately match your foundation with your body’s skintone and blend your foundation evenly.
Practice, Practice, Practice
·      Practice at home even when you have nowhere to go.
·      Makeup application is 10 percent skill and 90 percent practice.

Don’t:
Don’t Reflect Too Much
·      Too much shimmer can catch the light and reflect in an awkward unflattering way.
·      Contour your face properly. Light pops features out and dark pushes features in.
·      Use shimmer on the bridge of your nose, the inner corners of your eyes, and the apples of your cheeks.
·      Don’t place too much shimmer on the brow bone (under your eyebrows) This can reflect badly in pictures.
Don’t Cover Up
·      Covering up skin problems such as acne or rosacea with heavy makeup can appear cakey.
·      Focus on skincare rather than makeup products to clear skin ailments.
·      Covering acne with light concealer will make it stand out even more, instead dab it with a foundation that matches your skintone and dust over it with powder
Don’t Clash
·      Use eyeshadow colors that compliment your skintone.
·      Always check expiration dates on products and store them well.
·      Update your makeup often, throwing out old mascara and sponges that may contain dirt and bacteria
·      Have Winter and Summer makeup because with each season, the shade of your skin changes.
Don’t Be a Victim
·      Makeup counters don’t have the proper lighting to match your skintone with foundation
·      A sales rep at the makeup counter is there to sell and may tell you anything to earn their commission.
·      Bring a friend
·      Walk outside in the natural light to compare your skintone with a tested spot of foundation.
Don’t Be Lowbrow
·      Don’t overtweeze your eyebrows.
·      Full eyebrows are associated with youthfulness
·      Follow the natural shape of your eyebrows when shaping them
·      Pluck one hair at a time and take it slow!
Don’t Fool Yourself
·      Just because a makeup trend is hot, does not mean it fits you
Don’t Stress Out
·      Do 30 min of aerobic exercise a day to keep your mind off your worries.
Don’t Mash Your Face
·      Your skin reacts to repetition and will begin to train the lines in your face to become more prominent.

“Realize that God gave you the features you have for a reason – mess with them and you might ruin his masterpiece.” – Andrea Dawn Clark

This chapter went more in depth about hair and clothes, but I’ll save that info for another day… If I still have your attention, let’s fast forward to the challenge!

“The only way to choose the “right” makeup, hair and clothing is to understand your total Beauty Equation”, according to Nigel, “You can’t look to others to define what you should wear any more than you can look to others to tell you who you are. Develop yourself and you will know what your personal style should be.”

Challenges:
1. Remove all your makeup and clean your face so that you are 100% natural. Let your hair down and wash any products that may be in it out. Take a beauty shot of yourself, just your face and hair wearing only your smile. Take a self-portrait and submit it to me at BlushingAmbers@gmail.com
Here's my naked face.
2. Studying your face in the portrait you just took, what do you believe your best features are? Accent that area with makeup. You want to draw attention to your greatest attribute. Take another self-portrait and submit it to me at BlushingAmbers@gmail.com
Drawing attention to my eyes with mascara on my lashes

3. This time create your signature look using all of the makeup you believe is necessary for a flawless look. Compare the 3 pictures and tell me which one you believe suits you best. Submit the self-portrait and your answer to BlushingAmbers@gmail.com
I feel more comfortable with this look because makeup makes me feel confident and hides my flaws.

The Beauty Equation Challenge 5: Spontaneity

We are currently on our 5th Challenge of Nigel Barker's Beauty Equation, spontaneity. The responses I have received from readers/followers has been great. Continue to submit your challenge submissions and find them here. Previously we discovered 3 other components of beauty (Allure, Confidence, and Compassion). Jump right in and send me your challenge submission as myself and other beauty bloggers and our readers reveal all the things that make us beautiful. For more info see the Introduction Challenge post.

Teach:
Spontaneity - to be curious, creative, offbeat, magnetic, and flexible. According to Nigel Barker, "[Spontaneity] It's the science of things coming together".  At first I couldn't understand why this would be a characteristic of beauty. Then it hit me, people are most beautiful when we capture them in their most natural state. That's why when you take a picture of someone laughing, the photo usually comes out as a good picture. The feeling we have when we laugh is a moment where we are not in control of our body. It's a moment of freedom.

Challenge:
Today's challenges are very specific to the content in Nigel's book and in order to make it possible for those who aren't able to read along, I created my own challenge for you all to follow.

1. Create a play list of at least 5 songs that are about being spontaneous. Send me the song titles or links to their youtube videos in an email to BlushingAmbers@gmail.com

Sadiddy by Brandy

Blindfold Me by Kelis

Let's Go Crazy by Prince

Thubthumping by Chumbawamba

Shut Up and Drive by Rhianna

2. Find a candid photo that was taken that you like and explain what's happening in the photo and why you think you look beautiful in it.
I chose this pic from my 24th surprise birthday party my friends threw me because it truly was a spontaneous reaction. You can see the gum in my mouth because I couldn't control the expression on my face, my mouth opened really wide. The picture is much more prettier without the explanation, but I hope you understand that these details are the examples of true freedom of expression. It's me in a live, candid moment and I think I'm beautiful!

The Beauty Equation Challenge 4: Compassion

Today, Blushing Ambers received a shout out on Nigel Barker's Facebook and Fan Page.  His book is such an inspiration and so my self as well as other bloggers have joined together in an effort to encourage our readers to join us in our journey to find our Beauty Equation.  To find out what this is all about, read up on the Beauty Equation Challenge here.  My postings are notes on key points from Nigel's book. So far in our readings, Nigel has taught us about 2 characteristics of beauty, Allure and Confidence. Today's teach is on Compassion. Compassion is the most important characteristic of beauty in my opinion. I strive as a beauty blogger to write topics that place value on self worth and self love and many times we can show self love through our compassion to others. Here's what Nigel wants us to know about Compassion.

Teach: Compassion – to be aware of the world’s troubles and do something about it

“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” – Dalai Lama

Learning From Our Elders
Think about your grandmother or a woman who has been like a grandmother to you. Picture her in your head. Would you describe her as beautiful? She is beautiful because you see her as such and that is likely because of your long relationship with her. She was always highly aware of your needs and instinctually did anything in her power to make you better, happier, and more safe and secure. She is the definition of compassion.

Understand that compassion begins with you and ends with someone else. It's about doing for others. Self-love comes from within. It’s about knowing who you are while accurately perceiving what is going on around you so that you effortlessly project the most beautiful you.

If you want to set an example, be that example. Don’t just bark out what the example should be.

Keep It Close to Home: Use What You Do to Help Others
- Volunteer to use your talents for an organization or individual that needs help
- We need to love one another in order to bring love to ourselves

It’s Nice to Be Nice to the Nice
Every little bit helps. Everyone can do something to effect change. For inspiration, take a look at the CNN Heroes (“Everyday People Changing the World”) website (www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/cnn.heroes/)

Baby Steps
Perform simple acts of kindness. When you go out of your way for people, you get a greater return on your investment. Showing common courtesy, leading by example, having an open heart, and actively going out of your way to help others is single-handedly the easiest way to build your own sense of worth, which will naturally build your confidence. A feeling of self-worth communicates a special, modest confidence.

“If you want others to be happy practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion” – Dalai Lama

Remember! No Good Deed Goes Unpunished.

Quick List: Things We Learned in Grade School That Still Go a Long Way
1.   Smile
2.   Say please and thank-you
3.   Pay someone a compliment
4.   Hold the door for someone
5.   Do a funny dance (make someone laugh)

“I have always had a deep sense of compassion for others, especially young women like myself. In order to pursue my dreams the way I wanted, I had to push aside negative self-images and learn compassion, forgiveness, and belief within myself. There I found confidence, courage, and beauty. – Naima Mora, ANTM winner

Humans Can Be Humane
“When we hurt the planet, we hurt ourselves.” – Nigel

CHALLENGES
1. If I Could Change The World
Think about the things in the world that bother you. What people or situations do you feel could be better if only they had a little tender loving care? What things close to home could be improved? Try to isolate 5 things you think need help in your world. Just concentrate on what you would change if you could. Research the things you could do to help with these causes. Now, record both the cause and what what can be done to be apart of the solution and email them to BlushingAmbers@gmail.com

1. World Hunger -  Participate in the Hunger Walk for the Greater Food Depository of Chicago
2. Body Dysmorphic Disorder - Create awareness through programming
3. Sustaining the Earth - Lower my carbon footprint
4. Poverty - Volunteer for programs in the community
5. Gang violence - Be a mentor

2. Feeling the Love
Channel the spirit of someone close to you who you think of as a caring and compassionate person towards you. In this moment, try to love yourself the way someone else does. Look toward the camera through their eyes and imagine the camera is you. Take a self-portrait. Along with your picture, send me an email of the name of the person who's spirit you channeled while taking your photo at BlushingAmbers@gmail.com
Channeling my mother

3. Show Some Empathy
Isolate one of the five things you came up with in the writing exercise. Pick the one of most importance to you that you feel needs YOUR help. Truly feel your desire to help, to make a difference, to affect the situation. Whatever your reaction, set up your camera and show me through your eyes the compassion you have. Take a self-portrait and email it to me with your chosen cause and the emotion you were portraying to BlushingAmbers@gmail.com.
My Cause: Body Dysmorphic Disorder Awareness/Emotion:Caring

4. Make That Change!
Imagine yourself contributing to the cause and finding a solution and change for the thing you perceived to need help. Take a self-portrait and email it to me with your chosen cause and the emotion you were portraying to BlushingAmbers@gmail.com

Beauty Equation Challenge 3: Confidence

Here we are in our third challenge for The Beauty Equation.  If you need to be brought up to speed on these posts click here and jump right in!  If you want to see submissions from other readers check out the Beauty Equation Challenge Submission Page.  NOTE That we are still accepting submissions. Email them to BlushingAmbers@gmail.com.  Also, other submissions were received but not published if the participant asked that the photos not be released. Many people are not yet ready to reveal everything about them or may be struggling with their own insecurities. That's okay! This Beauty Equation Challenge is being done as an interactive book club to encourage others to not be afraid of their natural beauty, inside and out. Blushing Ambers will not push you further than you wish to go, we can only put the information out there and pray you will grow and learn something from what has been written. As you embark on this journey feel free to ask questions, leave comments and subscribe. Good Luck! Look for a new challenge every Tuesday and Thursday!

Teach: Confidence – to believe in your power and ability

You know it’s easy to look, feel and act confident when you know you’re good at something and you should allow yourself to feel good about being good at those things. But when there is pressure from having to take center stage, you have to learn how to transform the natural human condition or apprehension about new and different things into a positive. In order to talk about confidence we have to address fear.

“Beauty is happiness. It’s going a full day without receiving a single compliment and being 100 percent confident you look amazing.” – Heather Muir, beauty editor for Seventeen Magazine

Harnessing Fear to Wrangle Success
Problems start when you let what you are afraid of rule your behavior. Transfer your anxiety into an ability to rise to the occasion and embrace your fears as an avenue to self-confidence.

Basic Equipment In the War Against Nerves
Know Your Machine! What happens when we get nervous? Our body releases adrenaline, which is produced by the adrenal gland, and this physically affects the body by increasing your heart rate, causing you to blush or have problems breathing. Perspiration, butterflies, and any number of physical quirks and ticks appear out of nowhere. The body sends adrenaline out in heightened situations, both positive and negative. You need to make note of how you personally react so that, when it happens, you have more control over it.

Here are some ways to control your reaction to your body's release of adrenaline
a. Knowing what to expect has a huge impact on our comfort and confidence levels.
b. Don’t Forget to Breathe. Adrenaline rushes often constrict the windpipes, veins, and lungs, resulting in troubled breathing. Make sure you aren’t holding your breath by accident.
c. Remember a Jedi is Always Prepared... meaning prepare and be honest and open when you need help
d. Feel The Beat, or Borrow One!Music can help improve your confidence. Let the song empower you every time you listen. Currently, my go to song is Beyonce' "Who Run the World (Girls)".
Just as you can control your nervous behavior, you can also discover your basic equipment in the fight to gain confidence. Think of confidence as a muscle you need to develop so it will be strong, agile, and ready to use when you need it. Understand that acting confident isn’t being confident. Confidence is not acting. It’s being. It’s believing in yourself, not in a projection of what you think others want you to be. In the same token, you don’t ever want to be accused of appearing superior, flaunting your success, or acting like you know it all. Know that confidence can get you in the door, but if you want to be invited back, use that confidence to show you are a team player.

Challenges:
1. “Dear Future Self”
Let’s kill any negative inner vices inside of you. Reference the lists you made from the Challenge 2: Allure submissions, the physical and emotional attributes that are unique and wonderful about you. Now, accentuate the positive! From these lists of attributes, write a short letter to your future self. Make it fun, affirm all of your best qualities, and explain to yourself why you deserve to be confident in any situation.

Dear Self,
You work hard to show others the beauty you posses inside throw kind words and deeds. You deserve to feel loved and you are worthy of respect. You have overcome many challenges that you can look back on and feel confident today that things will work out in your favor. Reward yourself with frequent trips the spa and if you low on cash buy some new polish and paint your toes!

signed,
Your Past Self

2. Your Golden Moment
Envision a moment where you win a gold medal at the Olympics. What is your sport and what country do you represent? Next, set up your camera, leaving it poised for you to set off the auto-timer when you’re ready for it to shoot. Play your confidence theme song and snap your Gold Medal self-portrait.
My sport is Football for the USA of course!

3. Fear Factor/ Eye Am In Control
Isolate something that scares you. Once you pick something, try to deduce what about it makes you afraid. Think back on a moment of weakness you had in the face of this. Get your camera ready and stare deep into the lens. Give your most courageous look and take a self-portrait.
I'm afraid of big dogs. They bite and are too friendly and that's what makes me feel uncomfortable and nervous.

Beauty Equation Challenge 2: Allure

Thursday of last week we began somewhat of an interactive book club where other bloggers and their readers joined together with Blushing Ambers and our readers to participate in Nigel Barker's challenges from his book The Beauty Equation.  As you know, Nigel Barker is a noted photographer widely known for his role as a judge on America's Next Top Model.  Just like on ANTM where the models learn a "teach" (lesson) and complete a challenge, our readers were able to do the same.  First, like Tyra, I completed the challenge for participants to see as an example. I would like to say thank you to those who took part in our very first challenge. Your submissions were beautiful headshots of yourself to use as a reference point for all the forth coming challenges.  Some were sent for my eyes only, but you can take a look at those who submitted for others to view here under Intro Challenge Submissions.

The Teach:
This weeks challenge is a bit more complex.  Let's begin with the teach. According to Nigel, Allure is  the ability to entice, invite, and attract others. What about you attracts people to you? Your personality? Infectious laughter? Wide smile? Allure is what helps you live up to your full potential in life. With that said, it is important to make good first impressions. How do you walk away as the chosen one instead of the wannabe? By putting your best foot forward at all times!

Here's Nigel's list on making a good impression:
    1. Be Neat, Clean and Groomed
    2. Stand up straight
    3. Make eye contact
    4. Listen
    5. Smile!

Here are a few more good tips:
- You are what you wear! Never dress in a way that doesn't define who you are. You can never go wrong with basics (i.e. The little black dress).
- Have you ever heard that less is more. This can refer to your accessories, makeup and sometimes how much you talk.
- Remember that hair is also apart of your ensemble. An updo that you would wear in a wedding may not be appropriate for a job interview.
- The difference between sexy and "hoochie".  Steer clear of crossing the line from flirty to overt cleavage.  Your setting and the occasion will dictate how you should dress.
 - Leave your baggage at home (If things are really bad, stay at home)
- Be impressive, not desperate or a brown noser. You don't want to appear to eager, you only want to show interest.
- Know your stuff/Be prepared. If the situation calls for a little research, be sure to take time prior to the occasion to prepare.
- Remember failure is not an option! Always think of situations in this matter and you'll be sure to end up on top.  In the times when you do not achieve your ultimate goal, if you gave your best, then you can be a winner in your own eyes.  That's what's most important since you are the one who has to live with yourself. lol. Also, many opportunities will arise because someone else may be watching and see the go-getter drive in you.
- Get out of your own way! Don't allow your personality flaws and immaturity to hold you down. Take a look at your friends and determine if your association with them could potentially conflict with the person you wish to become.
- Last, but just as important as the rest, be yourself, not an imitation of someone else. Don't portray who you think someone wants you to be, but actually be who you really are - the professional you. Knowing that people accept you for who you really are feels good.

The Challenges:
1. Take an oath
"Honesty is an active verb, not a passive noun. Go out of your way to be truthful, beginning with the things that you say to yourself." - Joe Tye, America's Values Coach
   a. "mean judge" Write down five things about yourself that you could easily improve with a little effort. (physical or personality wise)
        1. Keeping my mohawk cleaned up (I always let it grow so much that people ask if I'm growing my hair out. I'm like no! I love my hawk! lol.)
        2. I have big ta-tas, I definitely need to have better support. I'll be purchasing new undergarments
        3. I am short. I could wear clothes that make me look taller.
        4. I have never in my life had enough water intake. I can drink 3-4 bottles of water to stay hydrated, good for my skin, too.
        5. My teeth have a yellow tent to them and I want to laugh and smile more. I need to see my dentist regularly and I think I could use some teeth whitening (Maybe I'll test out the strips.)

   b. "nice judge" Write down five things about you that you feel are your most important physical attributes. What makes you unique and helps you make a good 1st impression?
        1. My smile is one of my best attributes
        2. I have a cute little button nose
        3. My eyes draw people in
        4. I have small petite hands and feet (culturally an admirable trait)
        5. I have really healthy curly hair

   c. "experienced judge" Offer yourself what you would consider sage advice. Write down five things that you feel are your most important emotional attributes, whether or not they need some improvement. What are the things inside that you feel rub people the right way when you meet them?
        1. I am approachable
        2. I always have something cordial to say
        3. I am a good listener
        4. I am honest
        5. I share stories people can relate to

2. Unforgettable
Think about your most memorable qualities (for example, a time when someone told you that they remembered you because you had an infectious laugh or beautiful smile). Embody just one of those and take a self portrait.
I was thinking about people who compliment me on my smile

3. What's Your Hook?
What is the message you most want to portray about yourself? What is it that you want the world to know about you? What do you stand for? Do you want to change the world? How? Do you want to shout out to the world that you are a kind and caring person? Are you mad as hell and not going to take it anymore? Think about it, and let your heart do the talking. Take a self portrait.

I'm a rebel...

4. The Eyes Have It
Think about one thing you want me to know about you and convey this through your eyes alone. Take a self portrait.
I contain multitudes!
As you embark on this journey feel free to ask questions, leave comments and subscribe. Good Luck!

The Beauty Equation: The Intro Challenge

Myself along with other fantastic beauty bloggers have joined together to create a wider sense of community among our readers/followers.  We want to tear down stereotypes about defining beauty and allow our readers to develop their own definition.  What better way to do that than through healthy discussion and positive feedback. We bloggers, want to bond with our readers and I know I feel like this is a great opportunity for me to get to know my readers and my readers to know me. So, if you are interested in participating, join in on the activity as we embark on a journey to solve our own personal Beauty Equations.

The Beauty Equation is a book written by the noted fashion photographer, Nigel Barker. It's more like a workbook formatted similarly to America's Next Top Model.  As seen on t.v., ANTM always has their models learn a lesson called a teach and put that in motion, a challenge.  And as just as Tyra gives her pre-challenge photos and provides support along the way, I plan to be their for you!

For those who agree to participate in The Beauty Equation Challenge, welcome to your first challenge. Yes, it starts right... Now!

I'll be posting my challenges twice a week. Each blogger's post is only a supplement on the topics in the book and so you don't have to read the book in order to participate. We are simply expounding on the topic and Nigel's nuggets of info, but if you do have the book great. Below is the first teach. Read it and then follow the instructions for the challenge. Email me if you have any questions.

Introduction: What is beauty, where does it come from, and how do we obtain it?
Teach: You've heard it many times before, "beauty comes from within". Nigel gives 10 essential qualities that add up to inner beauty (I'll go into these in more detail each challenge).  He believes unveiling these characteristic in you will bring your inner beauty out. For years people have created social and cultural ideas of beauty that are accepted among a large group of people.  For example, having small feet was seen as a physical trait of beauty.  Women would often cut their toes off or bound them under their feet to make their feet fit smaller shoes in many countries, including America. Unfortunately, to this day, people all over the world continue to use extreme tactics to fit into the beauty category.

Intro Challenge: Take a couple of simple head shots and submit them to me at BlushingAmbers@gmail.com with your name in the body and The Beauty Equation Intro Challenge in the Subject line. This will be the reference point for all your future photos. I'll post them to this blog. We'll look back on these later and smile... or laugh, I promise!

Beauty Equation Introduction

I'm looking for Beauty Bloggers and Blushing Ambers' followers to do Nigel Barker's Beauty Equation challenges... The book gives teaches and then challenges similar to America's Next Top Model on accepting and showing your own personal beauty. This is a great way to overcome any fears of flaws and let go of our beauty hangups. This is kind of like a book club, but we will be creating posts for readers to follow rather than one single meet up.  If you are with me in this challenge, comment below and email me at BlushingAmbers@gmail.com.

1st Challenge will be given on this Thursday June 23rd! Good Luck!
